Mission Statement

The Historic Watertown Website, believing that a sense of history is fundamental to understanding human experience, collects, preserves, and shares materials from Watertown’s past, so that present and future generations can comprehend more fully their predecessors, their community, and themselves. Pursuing the highest standards of collection, preservation,

presentation, and management, the Society encourages and assists people of all backgrounds and interests to learn more about Watertown’s varied history.

The Mission of the Historic Watertown Website (HSW) is to explore and to excite a general interest in the study of all historical events, subjects, and questions, whether of a nature civil, military, educational, ecclesiastical, or otherwise, that connect themselves with any portion of the large territory that was originally included under the municipal title of Watertown; to obtain biographical sketches of all individuals ever resident therein who have become distinguished in state or national history; and in general not only to obtain the above historical knowledge, but to preserve and make it known; to maintain a society building at 28 Marshall Street, Watertown, Massachusetts, 02472, (known as the Edmund Fowle House), with a museum, art gallery, and library.

Project Sign and the Edmund Fowle House and Museum
The Historical Society of Watertown has finished the process of restoring and preserving the Edmund Fowle House and to maintain it as a living archive for future generations. The goals of the Society are education, preservation and restoration with the house as headquarters for its functions and activities. See the early settlers
To this day the Society is committed to fulfilling its mission of preserving the history of Watertown
